Breastfeeding & Fasting During Ramadan: A Guide for Moms

Fasting during Ramadan is a spiritual practice, but for breastfeeding moms, it can bring unique challenges. If you're considering fasting while breastfeeding, it's essential to understand how it may affect your body and your baby.

To help you make an informed decision, Hala Sahili, a trusted lactation consultant and pediatric nutritionist, shares her expert tips on fasting while breastfeeding.

Can a Breastfeeding Mom Fast?

Fasting while breastfeeding is a personal choice, and every mother’s experience is different. Some moms can fast without issues, while others may struggle and need to compensate later.

Conditions for Fasting While Breastfeeding

If you decide to fast while breastfeeding, consider these important factors:

Mom’s Checklist:

  • Has an established, stable milk supply.
  • Stays well-hydrated between iftar and suhoor.
  • Follows a well-balanced, nutrient-dense diet.
  • Gets enough rest to conserve energy.

Baby’s Checklist:

  • Is at least 3 months old (younger babies rely exclusively on breast milk, making fasting more challenging).
  • Maintains a normal count of wet diapers and stools.
  • Continues to gain weight and grow as usual.

Tips for Breastfeeding While Fasting

If you choose to fast, here are some practical tips to help maintain your milk supply and energy levels:

  • Stay Hydrated – Drink as much as usual (or more) between iftar & suhoor to prevent dehydration. Coconut water, herbal teas, and water-rich foods can help maintain hydration levels.
  • Eat Well – Maintain your usual calorie intake, focusing on healthy fats, proteins, and complex carbohydrates to keep your energy levels stable.
  • Listen to Your Body – If you feel weak, dizzy, experience a significant drop in milk supply, or notice changes in your baby’s feeding patterns or diaper count, consider stopping the fast.
  • Expect More Night Feeds – Some babies may breastfeed more at night to compensate for any daytime decrease in milk production.
  • Pump If Needed – If you notice a drop in supply, consider pumping extra milk at night or early morning to maintain production.
  • Prioritize Rest – Nap when your baby naps to conserve energy and reduce fatigue.

Every Journey is Unique

Fasting while breastfeeding is a personal decision that depends on your health, your baby's needs, and how your body responds. Always listen to your body and consult a healthcare professional if needed. If fasting feels too challenging, remember that Islam provides flexibility for mothers in such situations.
